Empirical formula | Determination of empirical formula

Definition

It shows the simplest whole ratio number between the atoms present in the molecule is called empirical formula.

Empirical formula

Example

Benzene and glucose

There are only four steps to determine an empirical formula

  • It is used to determine the percentage composition of each element in a compound.
  • Empirical formula is used to determine the gram atom of each element by percentage of element with its atomic mass.
  • It is used to determine atomic ratio by dividing the smallest last mole of an element.

  • If there is a whole ratio number, multiplying with the small suitable digit to get the whole ratio number.

Thus an empirical formula is obtained.
